Some documents are just too important to leave out in the open where other people can read them. While physical documents can be locked in a safe or a drawer, there is no such place for digital ones, unless you have some third-party utility. A good solution is Melgo, which is designed to encrypt documents, using a key of your choice or a randomly generated one. With just a few clicks or keystrokes, you can prevent other people from opening your documents and reading your private information.

Melgo is portable, which means that you don't have to install it. You only need to extract its components from a ZIP archive and run the executable. You can even run the application from a removable drive. It doesn't use a significant amount of resources and it doesn't have any special requirements.

When launched, Melgo will display a simple toolbar. Clicking the first option on this bar will reveal a file browser, which you can use to explore your local files and folders. When you open one of your folders, you may click a button if you want to know how many items you have in that folder and how many of them are encrypted. Furthermore, the software can display various details about each file, as well as their actual contents, in the case of text files.

Encrypting a file is quite easy. You simply need to select one and click the lock icon, on the application's toolbar, which will take you to a virtual keypad. Here you can type an encryption key on your keyboard or use the mouse to click the numbers, if you are worried about keyloggers capturing what you type. Additionally, the application provides corresponding options for the Home, End, Insert, Page Up, Page Down, Insert and Delete keys, as well as options for generating a random key and, of course, for encrypting the selected file.

Your encryption key can have anywhere between one and seven digits. Regardless of how many digits you have, it barely takes a second to encrypt a file. Once encrypted, your file will be inaccessible. If you try to open it, the operating system won't know what application to use for that file. Decrypting a file is just as easy. All you have to do is go through the exact same process. Just select a file, insert your key and click a button, though you should make sure you insert the correct key, otherwise you may have a hard time decrypting the file, because the application doesn't notify you if you insert the wrong key. It will simply mark the file as decrypted.

Your documents or any other files can be kept under lock and key at all times, without any effort, thanks to Melgo's straightforward functionality.

Pros

You can encrypt files using random keys. The application has a clean and simple design and it's quite easy to use. It only takes a second to encrypt a file.

Cons

You can lose a file forever if you decrypt it with a wrong key or a different Melgo version.
